Sears Holdings announced on Thursday it would close more than 100 stores -- including its Bangor Sears store -- in the spring.

Sears Holdings is the parent company of Sears and Kmart stores. Employees at the 39 Sears stores and 64 Kmart stores were informed Thursday that the stores would close between early March and early April 2018, according to a news release from the company.

The Bangor store, located at 693 Stillwater Avenue, is scheduled to close in early April. Liquidation sales will begin as early as Jan. 12. The Sears Auto Center will remain open, according to an employee of the auto center.

"[W]e will continue to close some unprofitable stores as we transform our business model so that our physical store footprint and our digital capabilities match the needs and preferences of our members," the company said in a statement.

Kmart in Bangor closed last year in an earlier round of cuts.

Sears has other stores in South Portland and Brunswick. Smaller "hometown" Sears stores are located communities including Ellsworth, Newport and Houlton.
