‘Pompeii Pizza’ Closes Its Doors, Barely After It Opens Them.
Barely a year after they opened their brick-and-mortar location, Pompeii Pizza on Central Street in Bangor has closed its doors.
Like many Bangor area folks, my first experience with Pompeii Pizza was their popular food truck down on the Waterfront. They specialize in wood fired pizza, and it's really good. Really, pretty much anything cooked in a wood fired oven is going to awesome. I'd probably eat skunk eyes if they were slow-cooked in a wood oven. (No, I wouldn't.)
But, according to a post on their Facebook page, Pompeii has closed their downtown location, likely after all the devastation that COVID-19 has brought to many small businesses around the country. Small restaurants have been hit especially hard, due to such razor-thin profit margins.
As a former restaurant owner, I'll vouch for this 100 times over. In the best of times, most restaurants are never more than a couple bad months away from closing. There's no such thing as deep pockets in the Mom & Pop restaurant biz. It's a lot of blood, sweat, tears, hope, and prayers.
But.... luckily for those in the Bangor area, not all hope is lost. Pompeii will continue to run their food truck in the warmer months, generally from May - October. So if you've become a huge fan of what they do, you'll still be able to get some of that delicious pie down your pizza-needy grocery hole.
As you know, lots of businesses haven't been so lucky as to have another avenue to keep their business afloat. It's good knowing that we can still get our fix on the Waterfront this summer. It's sad to see their shop go, but it'll certainly be worth the wait when they come back.
