Old Town Police Release Details of 17-hour Standoff

Old Town Police have identified the man, now in custody, who was the subject of a 17-hour standoff Monday.

Thadius Wind, 46, is charged with terrorizing with a dangerous weapon, violation of conditions of release, and criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon.

Deputy Chief Lee Miller says officers were called to 812 Stillwater Avenue just after midnight on Monday, to a report of a tenant in apartment #2 that was having a mental health issue. The caller told authorities that the man had been yelling for over an hour. Several units responded to the call, as the tenant had a history with police.

Arriving officers reported hearing Wind yelling and screaming in the upstairs apartment. They looked through a window and saw Wind standing just inside, waving a large sword and threatening to harm the officers.

During the investigation, police learned that Wind's girlfriend was also in the apartment. Wind would not let her come to the window, at first, but police were finally able to make contact with her and she was allowed to leave. No one else was in the apartment, and so police asked Wind to come outside, but he refused.

At this point, police evacuated the rest of the tenants and declared him a 'barricaded subject.' A perimeter was set up and Stillwater Avenue was shut down between Governor's Restaurant and the Methodist Church. Police applied for, and later received, both an arrest warrant for Wind and a search warrant for his residence.

The Maine State Tactical Team was able to take Wind into custody without incident at approximately 5:40 p.m. Monday. He was then taken to the Penobscot County Jail.

More charges may be pending, according to police.

Wind was out on bail, following an incident on June 1, when police were called to the same address for a report of disorderly conduct. Old Town Police say he allegedly threatened a neighbor and appeared to be having a mental health issue. After resisting arrest, he was taken to the hospital for an evaluation and was released. At that point, he was charged with criminal threatening.
