Governor Mills said
“Snowmobiles and ATVs are as much a part of the Maine outdoor experience as hiking boots, snowshoes, and skis.”
The former railroad corridor trail, known as the Madison Branch, will run 32 miles across Kennebec and Somerset Counties and will be connected to the Maine Interconnected Trail System, or ITS, and Maine ATV Trail System, MATS.
The trail passes over the Kennebec River and the Carrabassett River. Imagine the gorgeous views. And the trestles will provide not only a spectacular look at Maine but a safe way to cross the rivers.
When the construction is complete, the trail will connect thousands of miles of local ATV and snowmobile trails. Plus be usable for non-motorized recreation, including hikers, bikers and skiers.
The Norridgewock town manager added:
“The acquisition of the Madison branch railbed is a major step forward for our region’s economy”
The Madison Branch rail trail will run through the Central Maine towns of Oakland, Fairfield, Norridgewock, Madison, Anson, North Anson, and Embden.
Completion will take up to two years. Start planning those all day and more long trips soon, and be thinking about how much of Maine you’ll see.

If you're new to the sport, we put together a list of gear you'll need for a fun, comfortable, and successful day on the ice. Some of these items are more essential than others. Some gear may not be essential at all, depending on how you plan to fish. Again, the items we listed are geared towards those who are new to ice fishing.
Before we get to the list, remember to dress appropriately for the cold weather. We didn't put warm outerwear on the list, but it's definitely a must-have. Dressing in layers is important to ensure you're warm enough throughout the day on the ice. If you start getting too warm, you can simply take a layer off. Hand warmers are also worth packing.
