The identity of a 15-year-old accused of killing a teenage girl in Mt. Vernon has been revealed in court.

Who Is the Suspect?

Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss says Aiden Grant, 15, of Wayne has been charged with murder. He made a court appearance in Waterville on Monday and is currently being held at Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland.

Maine State Police say Brooke McLaughlin, 14, of Mt. Vernon, was found dead in her home a week ago by her mother. The State Medical Examiner's Office ruled the death a homicide and Grant was arrested on Saturday. McLaughlin was a student at Maranacook Community Middle School in Regional School Unit 38.

Did He and the Victim Know Each Other?

According to the BDN, McLaughlin and Grant knew each other. A red Chevrolet Impala that was taken from McLaughlin's home was recovered near Wayne. Grant just finished his 8th-grade year at Maranacook Community Middle School. Superintendent of schools, Jay Charette says parents can reach out to their child's principal to connect with grief counselors if they're needed.

No details have been released about the teen's cause of death or a possible motive for the murder.
