Man Wanted In Connection With Daughter’s Fentanyl-Related Death

Police have issued an arrest warrant for a Winterport in connection with the fentanyl-related death of his daughter in Bangor last year.

Shane Smith, 31, is wanted on a charge of endangering the welfare of a child, Class D.

The child's mother -- Kimberly Nelligan, 33, of Bangor -- was charged Tuesday with endangering the welfare of a child and drug possession, according to a news release from the Bangor Police Department.

The charges are in relation to the death of the couple's 1-year-old daughter, Jordynn Nelligan.

On October 19, 2018 at approximately 11 p.m., Bangor police and fire responded to a residence located at the Holiday Trailer Park in Bangor for a report of an unresponsive 1-year old child. Initial responding officers began performing CPR on the child, who was then transported to the Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center.

Efforts to save the child at the hospital were unsuccessful and the child was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to police.

A post-mortem examination was conducted at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and the cause of death was found to be probable toxic effects of fentanyl.

Police say Smith had been in contact with detectives and had made arrangements to turn himself in. Smith did not keep his scheduled meeting and has stopped responding to detectives, police said.
