There’s a big push to get a whoopie pie emoji added to smartphones. A Penn State educator, Bill Zimmerman, submitted an official proposal to the "Unicode Consortium" which is the group that decides which emojis exist. The idea is simple: whoopie pies are a big deal in parts of the U.S., especially in places like Maine and Pennsylvania, so many people think they deserve a spot alongside other food emojis.

There’s something very Maine about this! Here in Maine, whoopie pies aren’t just any dessert, they’re part of our culture. You’ll find them in bakeries, at fairs, and just about anywhere people are looking for a little extra sweetness with that classic chocolate cake and creamy filling.

The idea is that if we already have emojis for donuts, cookies, and other desserts, the whoopie pie should definitely be in the mix too. It has that classic New England vibe, simple, nostalgic, and deeply tied to local pride.

Right now, it’s still just a proposal, so it hasn’t made it onto phones yet. And even if it does get approved, it will still take time before it shows up on your emoji keyboard. But the fact that it’s even being considered is pretty cool.

If everything goes right, a new emoji usually takes about 1 to 3 years to go from proposal to actually showing up on your phone. Fingers crossed!

Of course Maine is home to the sweetest day of the year. On Saturday, June 13th, the town of Dover-Foxcroft, once again becomes the Whoopie Pie capital of the world, when the Maine Whoopie Pie Festival returns for another exciting year.

For the second time in its 17-year history, the Festival will be held at the Piscataquis Valley Fairgrounds instead of downtown Dover-Foxcroft. The fairgrounds are located at 77 Fairview Ave, Dover-Foxcroft.

Don't miss this iconic event, that runs from 10am-4pm

Make sure you make the trip for a day of fun, music, and of course…food!

A whole day of artists, crafters, vendors, live music, games, and activities for kids, dozens of bakers, and tens of thousands of whoopie pies.
