It's fitting that the home state of Stephen King is also home to the most spooky sightings, when it comes to ghosts, in the whole country. After all, it wasn't long ago that the Travel Channel show Paranormal Caught on Camera deduced that a Hellhound might be roaming the state's dark rural roads. It appears when it comes to encounters with the unexplained, Maine is the place to be.

According to data from GhostsOfAmerica.com, at 56 sightings per every 100,000 people, Maine has the highest frequency of ghost sightings in the country. In particular, Sanford residents have reported 23 different ghost sightings or encounters since 2005.

In past 15 years, there's been 758 ghost sightings or encounters reported in Maine. When compared to state populations, Maine ranks highest in reported ghost sightings per-capita compared to the rest of the country.

For UFO enthusiasts, Maine is also a prime location for weird spacey sights. According to data compiled by internet provider SatelliteInternet.com, Maine is among the top five states with the most unidentified flying object sightings per capita. Reports to the National UFO Reporting Center ranks Maine fourth in sightings overall. Surprisingly, Maine tops New Mexico (home to the infamous Roswell incident) in sightings. New Hampshire makes the list as well at No. 3, with Idaho topping the rankings.
