More Mainers have tested positive for COVID-19, the respiratory disease caused by the novel coronavirus.

As of Monday, March 30, there were 275 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Maine, according to state officials. Forty-nine people have been hospitalized. There have been  6,088 negative tests. There have been three deaths, including one man and one woman in their 80s from Cumberland County and a man in his 60s, who was employed by the Maine Department of Transportation.

Thus far, the cases are centered mostly in southern Maine, with the majority in Cumberland County. The virus has been recorded in 12 Maine counties.

There are 12 cases in Penobscot County. Five of those people have recovered and two are being hospitalized.

Forty-three people with the virus are healthcare workers. The average age of those with coronavirus is 55 years old.

Dr. Nirav Shah, the head of the Maine Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, urged Mainers, no matter where they live, to practice "social distancing" to help stop the spread of the virus.

"Live your life as if COVID-19 is already in your community," Shah said during a recent news briefing. "Even if COVID-19 is not confirmed in your county, it's likely there."

Shah also advised Mainers to live their lives as if they, themselves, have the disease. That way, you are more careful to keep your distance from other people.

"How you live your life today can affect the lives of others in your community," Shah said.

The numbers show 41 Mainers have recovered from the virus and released from isolation.

The coronavirus pandemic has caused local schools throughout the state and the nation to send students home as well as the cancellation or postponement of many public events, including major sporting events such as the National Basketball Association season, the Major League Baseball season and the NCAA basketball tournament.
