Leroy Smith III of Gardiner made his first court appearance (May 8) today. He's accused of killing his father, 56-year-old Leroy Smith II at their Gardiner home on Cannard Street. His father’s remains were found Monday (May 5) in numerous trash bags left in a wooded area off Lincoln Street in Richmond, about eight miles from their apartment.

No plea was entered and Smith will be held in Kennebec County Jail until a July 15 court appearance. He was ordered held in jail until he can undergo a psychological exam.

The maximum sentence for "intentional or knowing or depraved indifference murder” is 25 years to life.
