10 Times Maine’s Stephen King Made a Cameo in Movies, TV and Commercials
Stephen King is hands down the most popular horror writer ever to put pen to paper. In his career he has written 65 novel from 1974's Carrie to 2023's Holly, plus he's written 12 collections of shor stories with the latest being You Like It Darker published in May 2024. That's 50 years of writing stories that the entire world enjoys.
There have been many of his novels and writings that have been adapted into flims. Some of the most popular being Carrie, Misery, The Dead Zone, and Stand By Me.
King has managed to find acting roles in many of his movies and even guest roles in television and a famous commerical. He was popping up in his own movies long before the late Stan Lee, former head of Marvel Comics, was popping up for a cameo in every Marvel movie.
So what movies has Stephen King made cameos? The list is long, so I've whittled down to 10 movies, tv show or commericals where Stephen King has a cameo roll, or in one case, is the star.
1. Maximum Overdrive
Based on a short story from his collection in Night Shift, Maximum Overdrive sees cars, trucks, radios, arcade games, and ATMs all becoming sentient after Earth crosses the tail of a comet, causing these machines to go on a worldwide killing spree.
King plays a man trying to get money out of an ATM that calls him an ---hole. There's some language in the clip, so be aware.
2. Sons of Anarchy
The action crime drama television series that ran on FX from 2008 to 2014 had a cameo with King King playing a character named Bachman in the Season 3 Sons of Anarchy episode "Caregiver." His character's name is from a pen name he once used, Richard Bachman.
3. It Chapter 2
King makes a cameo in It Chapter 2 as a pawn shop owner where adult Bill finds his childhood bicycle. This was a scene that King came up with himself.
4. The Simpsons
Stephen King in cartoon form on The Simpsons? You bet! This was one of a few animated cameos that King lent his voice to.
5. Frasier
It's very brief but in an episode of Frasier, which was famous for having celebrities lend their voices to the callers on Frasier's radio show, had King as the second of two back to back callers.
6. The Langoliers
The Lanogliers was a two-part miniseries that aired in 1995 on ABC. Part of the plot is a plane that lands at Bangor International Airport. King cameos as Tom Holby, Craig Toomy's boss, who reveals in a hallucination that he lost $43 million on junk bonds.
7. Sleepwalkers
This 1992 movie was written by King who cameos as a cemetery caretaker.
8. Under the Dome
This is another scene where if you're not paying attention you may miss him. In the TV series Under the Dome, based on his novel of the same name, King makes a quick appearance in the first episode of the second season.
9. Fever Pitch
This Stephen King cameo was not one of his movies, but a scene includes King throwing out that first pitch at Fenway Park. It stars Jimmy Fallon and Drew Berrymore.
10. American Express
American Express had a series of commercials in the 80s featuring celebrities asking viewers, "Do you know me?" It wasn't until the end of the commercial that the name of the person was "typed" onto an American Express card. This was Stephen King's commercial.
