This wall of birdhouses in Moscow, Maine, is completely eye-catching!

While driving through Maine to the Forks, you pass through Moscow, Maine, along Route 201 (Old Canada Road). There's plenty to gawk at, from the Kennebec River to the mountains in the background and the wildlife you may encounter. But then, a wooden wall pops up out of nowhere, adorned with birdhouses!

When did birdhouses start popping up on Route 201 in Moscow, Maine?

An article in Down East suggests that the first glimpse of a birdhouse on this wall was a fluke caught by Google Maps in 2011. One blue birdhouse was caught by the Google Street car that drives around mapping out Maine.

That same view is a whole lot different in 2023, and it looks like the original blue birdhouse is gone.

It truly is a thing to see, because it's not just a couple of feet. It's a third-of-a-mile long, and covered with birdhouses. Someone counted 145 of them, but I would guess there are many more than that.

I think all it takes is one, and if Mainers like what they see, they want to join in the fun. Many have contributed birdhouses on their way to camp in Jackman. If you are on your way to Jackman, you will see this wall. It reminds me of the 'shoe tree' on your way to Houlton on Route One.
