Authorities in Bangor are saying a crash that happened on Union Street Tuesday afternoon, which resulted in the closure of that area to vehicles for several hours, was caused by a failure to stop at a stop sign, and poor tires.

According to Bangor Police Department's Public Information Officer, Jason McAmbley, when officers arrived on the scene, just after noon on Tuesday, there found a Jeep Wrangler on its side and a damaged black SUV in the inbound travel lane of Union Street.

There was also a man lying face down in the grass off 15th Street.

"Independent witnesses at the scene told police the male driving the Jeep was traveling southwest on 15th Street and failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection of Union and 15th, and was struck by the SUV that was inbound on Union Street. The male driver of the Jeep Wrangler, Ismael Hategekimana, 41, of Portland was transported to a local hospital, where he was treated and released. Hategekimana was issued two traffic citations; Failure to Stop at a Stop Sign, and Inadequate Tires. "

McAmbley said Union Street was shut down for a while, while the scene was fully reconstructed, with pictures and measurements taken.

Traffic was opened back up to the public by Tuesday evening.
