You put hours of effort into wrapping presents and decorating the tree, only to have it all undone in a matter of minutes, and thrown into trash bags in the corner of the garage.

Now that the holidays are over, many of us are left with the challenge of what to do with all that holiday trash that accumulated after Santa stopped in with all his presents.

For those in communities like Bangor, who have limits on how much waste they can get rid of in a normal-sized bin each week, the holiday trash overflow can be a bit of a challenge.

For instance, I have four kids...I can tell you that the bags of wrapping paper and boxes from Christmas morning alone could fill 3 bins, not even counting our weekly household trash. There's no way it's all going to make it on the truck during our regular Tuesday morning pick up.

Luckily, Bangor's got a temporary solution for folks like me.

According to the City of Bangor's Facebook Page, Bangor residents who can't fit all those holiday wrappings, boxes, and bags, can dispose of them in a special dumpster, right at the Public Works Facility (530 Maine Ave.) for free...but only for a short period of time.

"Residents will be able to drop off holiday waste for one week only – Jan. 6 through Jan. 11. Drop-off hours are from 7 a.m. to sunset, Monday through Saturday. There will be a dumpster for wrapping paper, bows, packing peanuts/foam, natural or fake wreaths, plastic, etc. "

Public Works officials ask that you don't mix your cardboard with other stuff you're dropping off. If you have boxes that you need to dispose of, keep them separate and use the separate cardboard dumpster to get rid of those items.

They also mention that while they can accept holiday overflow, from gift-giving exchanges, household trash still needs to be thrown away in your regular bins. They will not be accepting that.

If you have a natural wreath or Christmas tree you're looking to unload, as long as all your decorations have been removed and there are no lights, wires, or tinsel on it, residents can rid themselves of all that pine right in the organic waste yard during regular hours, too.
