Maine Free Community College Program Still Requires a FAFSA
The program will require that each student first fill out a FAFSA or Free Application for Federal Student Aid. They must accept all available grants first, then the free tuition will cover the rest.
It allows young people to start their careers, and their adult lives, without the burden of school loan debt.

President of the Maine Community College System, David Daigler, says this is an amazing opportunity for students who may not have believed it was attainable.
Knowing it's available on an ongoing basis means a generation of young people can move with confidence and intention toward a brighter future for themselves and for Maine.
Maine Free Community College Program Opens Opportunities for Students
Daigler and I chatted last year about the program that has provided higher education to large numbers of students who wouldn't be able to afford it, without the free tuition.
He said the two-year program is enough for some students to achieve the career they want to pursue.
For others, it provides many of the basic requirements needed for a bachelor's degree program that can be continued at another institution after those two years.
The biennial budget, signed by the Governor on April 10, 2026, adds the program to the State's baseline budget, making it permanent for future high school graduates.
