
Department of Government Efficiency Officially Shuts Down
The department responsible for job and funding cuts throughout the federal government has shut down.

The Department of Government Efficiency, known as DOGE, shut down operations on July 4th after leading efforts to reduce federal jobs and funding.
In a social media post, the department said its formal mission had ended, but added that efforts to eliminate waste, fraud, and abuse should continue.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order on January 20th, 2025, renaming the U.S. Digital Service as the U.S. DOGE Service.
Setting the department’s expiration date as America’s semiquincentennial, the executive order created DOGE, with Amy Gleason serving as acting administrator from February 2025 until Saturday. Elon Musk oversaw DOGE’s early work before leaving the administration and later feuding with Trump over the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.
