Maine Heating Oil Prices Have Jumped Nearly $2 A Gallon In One Year

Mainers preparing for another heating season are facing a dramatically different price for No. 2 heating oil than they were just one year ago.

According to the Maine Department of Energy Resources, the statewide average cash price for No. 2 heating oil currently stands at $5.15 per gallon. The state's latest survey was conducted on August 24, 2026, just days before the beginning of September.

That is a substantial increase compared with where prices stood entering September last year.

According to the state's September 2, 2025 heating fuel price survey, the statewide average price for No. 2 heating oil was $3.32 per gallon.

That means the statewide average has climbed by $1.83 per gallon in roughly one year, an increase of approximately 55%.

For Maine homeowners who rely on oil for heat, that increase can quickly become significant.

A 200-gallon delivery at last September's average price of $3.32 per gallon would have cost about $664. At the current statewide average of $5.15, the same 200 gallons would cost about $1,030.

That's a difference of approximately $366 on a single 200-gallon delivery.

Heating oil prices also remained relatively stable throughout September of last year. According to the state's September 22, 2025 fuel price report, the statewide average was still just $3.33 per gallon three weeks into the month.

By September 29, 2025, the statewide average remained at $3.33 per gallon.

So, while individual dealer prices varied depending on location and purchasing programs, the statewide average stayed close to $3.30 per gallon throughout September 2025.

Kerosene And Propane Have Increased Too

No. 2 heating oil isn't the only home heating fuel costing Mainers more this year.

According to the Maine Department of Energy Resources' current fuel price data, the statewide average price for K-1 kerosene is now $5.97 per gallon.

At the beginning of September 2025, kerosene averaged $4.21 per gallon statewide.

That's an increase of $1.76 per gallon, or approximately 42%.

Propane has increased as well, although the year-over-year change is considerably smaller.

The statewide average price for propane was $3.02 per gallon on September 2, 2025. The latest state survey puts the statewide average at $3.20 per gallon.

That's an increase of about 18 cents per gallon, or roughly 6%.

The state notes that its reported heating oil and kerosene figures are statewide spot cash averages and individual prices can vary considerably by region and dealer. Propane pricing can also vary based on annual consumption and how the fuel is being used.

Still, the year-over-year comparison for Maine's most commonly used heating fuel is striking.

Mainers entered September 2025 paying an average of about $3.32 per gallon for No. 2 heating oil.

As September 2026 begins, that statewide average is now $5.15 per gallon, about 55% higher than it was one year ago.
