Regardless of your political leaning, there is no denying that the State of Maine government likes to charge us lots of money.

Some of these charges come in the form of taxes.  In other cases, however, the state gets us with the fees we have to pay.  Register this, license that, etc.  It seems like, no matter how you want to spend your time, travel to work or school, or live, the state has a way of getting its cut.

Because of this, what I started to read online the other day was not a huge surprise.  Over the last few days, I have seen several social media posts about a new new Maine law that would require people to register their lawn mowers.

According to the post, the law what is entitled "An Act to Require Annual Registration of Residential Lawn Mowers" is set to go into effect on January 1st, 2027.  The post explains that all lawn mowers will need to be registered with the state and that the registration fee will be $38.  If the authorities find you in possession of an unregistered lawn mower you could be fined up to $50.

So, is it real?

Well, as far as we have been able to determine (and yes, we have spent a lot of time searching various legislature sites) it is not legit.

It appears to be some kind of "rage bait".

However, there are several instances where you do need to register your lawn mower.  The only time you would need to register it is if it is considered special equipment or if it is intended to be drive on the roads.  Get more details HERE
