From almost the moment Kill Bill: Vol. 1 was released in theaters, Quentin Tarantino has openly discussed the fact that he might some day want to return to that universe and those characters for a Vol. 3, based on the scene early in the first film where Uma Thurman’s Beatrix Kiddo kills fellow assassin Vernita Green — and her young daughter Nikki walks in on the fight’s bloody aftermath. The pitch is simple: Nikki grows up and wants revenge on Beatrix, the same way Beatrix wanted revenge on Vernita, Bill, and the rest of the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad for killing her husband and destroying her wedding.

Tarantino never made Vol. 3 though, and now he’s approaching the end of his filmmaking career (at least according to him). With just one more film left to make before his self-imposed retirement, he’s running out of time to return to Kill Bill. But according to QT himself on the Happy Sad Confused podcast (via Collider), the idea isn’t dead. In fact, he says he and Thurman have been discussing it anew:

Me and Uma have talked about it recently, frankly, to tell you the truth. I have thought about it a little further. We were talking about it literally last week. If any of my movies were going to spring from my other movies, it would be a third Kill Bill.

Tarantino and Thurman haven’t made a film since Kill Bill: Vol 2, following a rift that resulted from the fallout over a stunt gone wrong on the set of Kill Bill that severely injured the actress. Apparently the two have reconciled, making a third Kill Bill at least theoretically possible. But Tarantino is also interested in making a Star Trek film as his last directing effort. So there’s already competition for his farewell.
