The former owner of Edge Video will spend five years in prison for dealing in pirated movies.

53-year-old Douglas Gordon of Mattawamkeag was convicted of mail fraud and copyright infringement after investigators found evidence that he had been copying movies and selling them. Gordon owned the Edge Video stores that were located on Main Street in Bangor and in the Brewer Shopping Center.

Gordon's lawyer had argued in court that his client felt he was only copying movies that were in the public domain and no longer covered under copyright laws. WGME-TV reports that lawyer Stephen Smith told jurors that the prosecution could not prove that Gordon was familiar enough with those laws to know that he had violated them. Gordon was found guilty in October of 2019.

According to WABI-TV, Gordon had three websites on which he sold the pirated movies. Court documents state that investigators found proof of over 48,000 counterfeit movies that earned Gordon over $638,000 in sales.

Douglas Gordon is sentenced to five years in prison and ordered to pay restitution to the victims of his pirating scheme.
