Flags Ordered at Half-Staff for Memorial Day, COVID-19 Victims

Governor Janet Mills has ordered flags lowered to half-staff starting immediately and throughout the Memorial Day weekend.

In the Maine CDC's daily coronavirus briefing on Friday, Governor Mills talked about challenges currently facing the state, including illness, death, and unemployment. In recognition of the 75 people who, as of Friday, have died from COVID-19, she ordered flags lowered immediately and until sunset on Sunday, May 24th.

"They were parents, grandparents, friends, neighbors, and loved ones; they were members of our Maine family, and they are missed every day, Governor Mills said in a statement. "I hope all Maine people will join me in not only offering our deepest sympathies to their families, friends, and communities, but also in recommitting ourselves to doing everything we can as individuals and as a state to save others."

In recognition of Memorial Day, the governor ordered all flags lowered to half-staff on Monday, May 25th from sunrise until noon, in recognition of the men and women of the military who gave their lives in defense of our country.

"Although this Memorial Day will be different from those past, what is not different is our unwavering gratitude for those who have faithfully served our state and nation in the Armed Forces and who gave, as President Lincoln said, 'the last full measure of devotion'."
