FDA & CDC Says To Check Your Red Onion And Salad Mixes
Just this past week, the Food And Drug Administration and the Center For Disease Control issued two separate warnings to do with produce that most of us probably have in our homes.
The first has to do with bagged salad mixes that may be linked to an outbreak of Cyclospora infections (really nasty intestinal infections...don't bother googling it-trust me, it doesn't sound fun at all!) that have popped up in several states. The potentially tainted salad products were made by Fresh Express, which can be found in stores like Walmart.
According to the FDA's website:
"On June 27, 2020, Fresh Express recalled products containing either iceberg lettuce, red cabbage or carrots and displaying the product code Z178, or a lower number. The “Best by” date on the products run through July 14, 2020. The recalled products were made in the Fresh Express production facility in Streamwood, Illinois and have the potential to be contaminated with Cyclospora. "
There's also been an issue recently with a Salmonella outbreak linked to red onions.
From the CDC's website:
"Do not eat, serve, or sell onions from Thomson International, Inc., or food made with these onions. Onion types include red, white, yellow, and sweet yellow varieties. At home, check your refrigerator and kitchen for recalled onions or foods made with them, such as salads, wraps, tacos, sandwiches, etc. Check the package or look for a sticker on the onion to see if it is from Thomson International, Inc., or one of the brand names below. If it is, don’t eat it. Throw it away."
The CDC says almost 400 people have been infected with Salmonella from 34 states, so far, with almost 60 having been hospitalized.
