A Doberman alerted a Maine State Police Trooper to a crash site.

Trooper Chris Pina was sitting in his cruiser at a crossover on I-95 near Lincoln at about 5:30 Sunday evening when a Doberman ran in front of the parked car. It must have startled him because you just don't find dogs running around on the interstate. Trooper Pina got out of the cruiser and prevented the dog from running back into traffic. He put the dog in his cruiser and said he noticed the animal was covered in mud and scratches. This led him to believe the dog was probably lost.

But as the Trooper was notifying dispatch about the dog, he noticed a man on the southbound side of the highway yelling for help. He activated his lights and pulled across the interstate to investigate. What he found was a double-rollover crash involving a maroon SUV and a green Rav 4. An investigation into the crash revealed that the driver of the Rav 4 had been traveling on I-95 when he fell asleep. He drifted into the travel lane and rear-ended the SUV, which had just safely merged into traffic from the on-ramp at Exit 227. The impact caused both vehicles to roll several times, sending the SUV into the ditch and leaving the Rav 4 on its roof in the travel lane.

The couple in the SUV had their dogs with them, which were both ejected from the vehicle. One of the dogs found his way to the police cruiser, while the second dog, a Doberman named Bentley, went missing. He has since been located and is being returned to his family. He was spotted on a game camera by Kathy Winslow of Lost Dog Recovery who was able to retrieve him safely. Nice work!
