Maine’s Weirdest Roadside Attraction Is Hiding in Plain Sight
This Should Be on Your Maine Summer Bucket List!
When you think of Maine, you probably picture rocky beaches, pine forests, fishing boats, skiing, hiking, and those famously brutal winters.
A desert probably isn’t on that list.
But believe it or not, Maine is home to one.
Tucked just outside Freeport sits the Desert of Maine, a surreal stretch of over 40 acres of sand that feels completely out of place in New England.

I came across it thanks to The Coverage Channel on YouTube, which travels the world documenting unusual places. I honestly had no idea this existed in Maine, and I doubt most people do either.
Here’s the wild part: many locals have driven right past it without realizing what they were looking at. It’s located at 95 Desert Road, hiding in plain sight.
But it’s more than just sand! Visitors can explore a restored 1783 barn museum, walking trails, nature areas, mini-golf, and picnic spots perfect for a summer stop. It’s designed as a full day trip, not just a quick photo op.
The Desert of Maine has also become a popular family destination, with something for kids, history lovers, and anyone curious about geology or natural oddities.
There’s even a campground with modern amenities like Wi-Fi, water, and electricity, making it an easy overnight getaway as well.
Just keep in mind: it’s a seasonal attraction and typically reopens in May after closing for the winter.
