Deering Oaks Farmers Market Moves Part Time to Payson Park Because of Browntail Moth

Deering Oaks has a browntail moth problem, and no one wants to buy fresh fruits and veggies with that around. Good thing there's another park near by.

According to the City of Portland, the Farmers Market will start at Deering Oaks on April 24th and run Saturdays and Wednesdays like normal. But come Saturday May 19th, farmers will move over to Payson Park off Baxter Boulevard in Portland. They will stay at Payson park for six weeks and go back to Deering Oaks on Wenesday June 30th and they won't move again.

The six weeks that the Market moves is when browntail moth caterpillars are most active and they munch on the leaves and shed their skins. That's what you don't want on YOUR skin! They cocoon in late June/early July and make those big ol' webs. Deering Oaks park won't be closed down in this six week window, but Portland will put up warning signs that they could have a problem if they are susceptible to the browntail moth.
