Belfast Luminaries Will Welcome In the New Year
One Maine town is lighting up the night this New Year's Eve with hope and soft light.
The town of Belfast is looking to light up the dark this New Year's Eve with citizen-contributed luminaries. A town organization called Our Town Belfast put out this event to encourage the community to join in on an activity to bring in the New Year together and to encourage a specific mindset when we go into the New Year: hope.
The town is encouraging its citizens to place luminaires throughout Belfast at dusk on New Year's Eve. The act of lighting and placing these homemade or storebought luminaries is a symbol of hope and is an act of "drawing the community together as we light the way into the New Year".
After placing the luminaries, townsfolk are encouraged to walk around Belfast or go for a drive around the beautiful bay and enjoy the other luminaries placed throughout the town.
Our Town Belfast states that there are luminaries kits that can be purchased at the Belfast Co-op for $10, which includes all of the items needed to build and illuminate your light.
The above Facebook post shared by Our Town Belfast on Monday shows pictures of luminaries made of a candle/fireless light and a simple brown paper bag and how beautiful they look lined up on a town block.
What a great way to ring in a new year for a small Maine town. Bundle up tight and don't forget to bring a nice hot mug of hot chocolate as you tour the luminaries of your town, Belfast.
