Bangor Police are advising residents to keep their vehicles locked, after a rash of 11 vehicle thefts.

Sergeant Wade Betters says the 11 reports of stolen vehicles have been taken since January 1st. Many of the vehicle had been left unlocked, with the keys in the ignition. It's often due to something most of us do, out of habit, without thinking of the risks.

When the weather starts getting cold in Maine, we run out and start our vehicles to let them warm up before using them. Unfortunately, there are opportunistic thieves who will take advantage of the owner's inattention and take the vehicle. They work very quickly so, while you're filling your travel mug with coffee, someone could be driving away with your vehicle.

Police advise residents to keep their vehicles locked at all times, including when running and unattended.
