The Bangor City Council is set to vote on Monday on whether to spend $1,000 on a floating sculpture to be anchored in the Kenduskeag Stream in Downtown Bangor this summer.

The 10-foot-tall coral-colored buoy by Eastport artist Anna Helper will be part of the artist's exhibition at the University of Maine Museum of Art on the banks of the Kenduskeag.

"Waterways are rarely used as sites for artwork, though we revel in the dark mystery of them and the romance of floating upon them," Helper wrote in her application for the grant.

The city's Business and Economic Development Committee gave its approval to the grant earlier this week. Helper will add another $5,000 towards the cost.

Once her exhibit at UMMA in Bangor is finished, she plans on moving the sculpture to other places around the state.

What do you think? Will this be a cool addition to the downtown this summer?
