Just before 8 PM Sunday evening, authorities in Auburn were called to a report of a house explosion on Broadway Avenue. When they arrived, they found a 35-year-old man with serious burns on his body.

Emergency crews were able to both put out the fire, which we're told was minimal, and get the patient to the hospital for treatment. They are not yet releasing his name.

Shannon Moss, with the Department of Public Safety, says the State Fire Marshall was called to the scene, to determine what led to the explosion and subsequent fire. And authorities believe they know what caused the damage.

"It was determined that the explosion occurred as a result of using butane to extract THC from marijuana.  The explosion caused extensive structural damage to the residence and a result the home is uninhabitable. The investigation is ongoing and the results will be forwarded to the Androscoggin County District Attorney’s office for review."

Moss says, aside from the man who was injured, there were other people in the home at the time of the incident, including a man and woman in their 70's, a 33-year-old woman, and a 7-year-old girl. They were not hurt in the explosion.

Moss stated that the gentleman who was injured was transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where he is expected to recover.

The Auburn Fire and Police Departments, along with the Auburn Ambulance service are being credited with aiding in this weekend's investigation.
