Bangor author Stephen King received the National Medal of Arts at the White House on Thursday, Sept. 10.

President Barack Obama presented the medal to King, who was described in the ceremony as "one of the most popular and prolific writers of our time."

For decades, his works of horror, suspense, science fiction and fantasy have terrified and delighted audiences around the world.

King in presented his award at the 49:32 mark in the video above.

King has written more than 50 novels and nearly 200 short stories.

King was among 18 people, including Oscar-winning actress Sally Field, that received the honor.
