The MDEA said the Washburn discovery follows the arrests of two people Monday night in Presque Isle on meth-related charges. Presque Isle Police made the arrests after a traffic stop and later asked for MDEA assistance. The MDEA and Washburn police evacuated tenants and put the building in lock down around 11:30 p.m.

Drug agents with protective suits and breathing apparatus will be gathering evidence from inside the apartment, the MDEA said on Tuesday.

On Tuesday afternoon, Maine State Police announce they had arrested a man and a woman in connection with the lab. The following people face charges:

Robert McKenzie, 22, of Washburn has been charged with Class “A” Aggravated Unlawful Operation of a Meth Lab. The charge was aggravated due to a prior drug felony and the fact that the illegal operation was taking place inside a multi-unit apartment building. McKenzie’s bail has been set at $20,000 cash or $100,000 surety.

Crystal Smith, 22, of Washburn has been charged with Class “A” Aggravated Unlawful Operation of a Meth Lab. The charge was aggravated due to the fact that the illegal operation was taking place inside a multi-unit apartment building. Bail has been set at $20,000 in cash or $100,000 surety.

The Washburn meth lab is the state’s 102nd meth response this year, an all-time record.  There were 56 meth responses during all of 2015.

We’ll have more information as it becomes available.
