Will Pot Be Legal in S. Portland, York and Lewiston Next?

A new battleground has been announced.

The Marijuana Policy Project has set its sights on Lewiston, South Portland and York as its new venue for pot legalization in Maine. The group says they will attempt to enact ordinances similar to Portland's, through local citizen petitions. The Marijuana Policy Project hopes these efforts will keep the discussion of legalizing Mary-J flowing in the state.

Seeking legalization in York, South Portland and Lewiston is another way for the Marijuana Policy Project gauge the attitudes of Mainers on the subject. The intel will help the group as they prepare to push the question statewide next year.

The marijuana question could play an interesting roll in the gubernatorial and legislative election.

Portland's ordinance is mostly symbolic, as police will still bust you for weed. Possession of small quantities of pot is a civil offense in Maine.
