A body found in the basement of a Waterville apartment house is confirmed to be Melissa Sousa, and her boyfriend is charged with murder.

Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland says the State Medical Examiner confirmed that the body discovered on Wednesday is the 29-year-old mother of two. She had been reported missing earlier this week, after last being seen dropping her daughters off at the school bus on Tuesday.

Her longtime boyfriend, and father of her children, 28-year-old Nicholas Lovejoy, is charged with murder. He already had been arrested just before midnight on Tuesday night for having a loaded shotgun in his truck, and for leaving the children alone. Lovejoy is being held at the Kennebec County Jail and is scheduled to make his first court appearance Friday at 3 p.m.

Sousa's cause of death has not been released. State and Waterville Police continue to investigate the death.
