As we told you in an article last week, a change is coming in the way trash is collected in the Bangor are. Starting the last week in June/first week in July, Bangor will kick off it's "Automated Curbside Garbage & Recycling Collection" complete with the new 96 gallon bins. The new bins will be delivered to Bangor residents starting this week. And there are some specific guidelines that will need to be followed as far as bin placement goes. This is due to the fact that the new bins will be collected via an automated system (so no more garbage men/women hopping on and off of the back of the truck.)

A mechanical arm will grab the 96 gallon cans and flip them up into the garbage truck. That means both the truck and the bins have to have enough room to work with. It also means you can't over-stuff the new cans, or put cardboard off to the side of the bin, or the system won't work correctly (because the trucks only collect what's in the bin--there's no one on board to hop out and get that extra stuff.)

You'll have to make sure the lids are closed, and that the bins aren't near a vehicle or mail box. The new trash cans will have to be placed side-by-side and not one in front of the other, too.

City Officials put out the details on the Bangormaine.gov website. They say both your trash and your recycling will still go together into the new bins.

And if you're wondering what to do with your old ones:

"Casella will take away any unwanted trash bins during the weeks of June 15th and June 22nd only. Simply mark them 'please take' and place them curbside as usual, and Casella will haul them away. The Coastal Resources facility in Hampden will recycle them. You can also keep them if you have other uses for them."
