Now, the story of Bigfoot really took off in 1958, according to History.com, when a letter about the discovery of some large footprints was published along with a journalist's response in the Humboldt Times in California.

This sparked widespread fascination with the possibility of a giant hairy ape-man hiding out in the wilderness, leaving barely a trace.

Since 1970, there have been at least 19 reports of Bigfoot sightings in Maine, according to The Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization.

There have also been reports not submitted to the above organization about sightings in the state, including an army veteran's chilling encounter in the remote woods or this photo that alleges to show Bigfoot in Millinocket.
