Halloween Shocker: Maine’s Most Unpopular Kind of Candy Revealed
As an adult, I miss Halloween.
Sure, there's plenty of parties you can go to and stuff like that. Bars all have big events and costume contests. But it isn't the same. As a kid, the anticipation of collecting unlimited amounts of candy was almost unbearable. And without fail, the thing I was looking for most in my pillow case, was the much coveted, $100,000 bar.

AKA, the Hundred Grand. It was my favorite. It had crispy stuff, chocolate, and caramel... Plus, probably a bunch of things I was forgetting. Other friends were looking for Tootsie Rolls or Nestle Crunch. And of course, let's not forget Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. Those were practically a form of currency as a kid.
Everyone has a favorite candy, but has it changed drastically?
When I was a kid, chocolate was king. Everything revolved around chocolate. It was the benchmark for all things sweet. But these days, if you look at a few different surveys of what Maine people think is the best candy, it's all the fruity candies. Skittles, Starburst, and Sour Patch Kids. Twizzlers, even. One thing suspiciously absent? Chocolate!
In another survey, Mainers said the best candy was Candy Corn! Like, what?! I like Candy Corn as much as the next guy, but Mainers are basically leaving chocolate in the dust. Twix and Snickers made the cut, but those are hardly what I would describe as chocolate-forward. It sure isn't the star of the show.
Does this mean that chocolate is Maine's least favorite?
I'm saying it does, for sure. Now, chocolate has plenty of time to shine the rest of the year. It's a highly successful Easter candy. And who doesn't love a Chocolate Cream Pie as an alternative at Thanksgiving? It's a standard at our house. And Christmas... forget about it. Chocolate shows up in everything.

But it's strange to me, that on the most celebrated candy day of the year, chocolate is just sitting by the curb, wishing it was cool enough to be part of the party. Maybe things will shift again as time goes on, but right now, all those super sweet, sugary candies are at the forefront. I'll skip those, and just eat all your mini chocolate bars, thanks!
