Maine's top fire officials believe a generator and heater may have caused a fire that leveled a home in Cumberland County early Friday morning.

According Maine Department of Public Safety spokeswoman, Shannon Moss, says firefighters were called to a home at 7 Hugh Avenue in Harpswell just after 2:30 AM, for reports of an active structure fire that was threatening a neighboring home at 5 Hugh Ave.

Folks inside the first burning home were able to alert their neighbors and with help from the Harpswell, Brunswick and Orr's Island and Bailey Island Fire Department, everyone from the home next door was able to escape without injury. That residence sustained only heat related damage, Moss says.

Meanwhile, the home at 7 Hugh Avenue was a total loss, with one person sustaining injuries from the blaze.

"One adult male occupant of 7 Hugh Avenue sustained a burn injury to his wrist and was transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland. The three other occupants of 7 Huge Avenue were not injured... Investigators believe a generator and use of a heater may have contributed to the fire."

State Fire Marshals were called into investigate the fire. They are still looking into the matter.
