Accident On Union Street in Bangor Has Part of Road Shut Down as Police Investigate

UPDATE: The road had been reopened.

An afternoon accident in Bangor has parts of a busy road shut down to traffic as authorities try to reconstruct the scene.

According to Bangor Police Department Public Information Officer Jason McAmbley, the crash took place Tuesday afternoon.

"There was a two-vehicle accident, two persons [were] transported for treatment. The road will be closed as the accident is being reconstructed. Vehicles can still get on the interstate via the overpass inbound. Outbound is shut off at 14^th Street."

Motorists are being advised to avoid that area, according to City Hall.

"The Bangor Police Dept. has Union St. closed from 14th St. to the I-95 overpass until further notice for an accident. Seek alternate routes and follow all signage and instructions."

Vehicles approaching the interstate Northbound onramp from the downtown area are being diverted down Beecher Park to loop around with Ohio, to avoid the scene.

That particular section of road has seen an uptick in accidents in the past few years.

According to Bangor City Engineer John Theriault, they even pulled the statistics on that site, as early as last year, to see what they looked like.

"The Engineering Department reviewed the three-year crash data from the Maine Department of Transportation that showed that the intersection is classified as a high crash location with eight crashes occurring in a three-year period.

The City heard public comment last summer on a proposal to make the turn onto Union Street from 15th Street a right turn only.

We don't know the conditions of those involved in today's crash.
