A Maine man was fatally shot by a Franklin County Sheriff's Deputy during an encounter in Phillips.
Witnesses Reported Seeing a Possibly Suicidal Man
Lawrence Scott, 61, caused concern after witnesses reportedly saw him with a gun at around 5:45 Tuesday evening. Some of the callers thought he could be suicidal while others reportedly thought it was a BB gun.
Officials Say the Deputy Tried to Convince Scott to Get Some Help
Franklin County Sheriff's Deputy Jesse Clement responded and found Mr. Scott on the side of a bridge on Salem Road in Phillips. Officials say Clement tried to convince Scott to get some help, but he refused. WGME-TV reports that Deputy Clement then ordered Scott to drop the weapon, but instead he allegedly raised the gun and Deputy Clement shot him. Mr. Scott died at the scene.
