A Maine man was fatally shot by a Franklin County Sheriff's Deputy during an encounter in Phillips.

Witnesses Reported Seeing a Possibly Suicidal Man

Lawrence Scott, 61, caused concern after witnesses reportedly saw him with a gun at around 5:45 Tuesday evening. Some of the callers thought he could be suicidal while others reportedly thought it was a BB gun.

Officials Say the Deputy Tried to Convince Scott to Get Some Help

Franklin County Sheriff's Deputy Jesse Clement responded and found Mr. Scott on the side of a bridge on Salem Road in Phillips. Officials say Clement tried to convince Scott to get some help, but he refused. WGME-TV reports that Deputy Clement then ordered Scott to drop the weapon, but instead he allegedly raised the gun and Deputy Clement shot him. Mr. Scott died at the scene.

Deputy Clement has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure in any police-involved shooting. The incident is now under investigation by the Office of the Maine Attorney General's Office.
