What Does Teal & Purple on Your Maine License Plate Mean?

If you have spent any time driving in Maine, you have probably realized that, for such a small state, we have a ton of different types of license plates.

We have plates for military veterans, plates for recipients of the Purple Heart, breast cancer awareness plates, and plates for University of Maine Black Bears players, to name just a few.

According to the Maine.gov website, there are over two dozen different types of Maine license plates.

Recently, I came across something that I was not familiar with. The brightly colored teal and purple (lavender?) colored plate really stood out.

Wondering what that plate color indicated, I hopped on the State of Maine website and did a little searching.  Before too long, I had my answer.

The Barbara Bush Children's Hospital Specialty Plate

According to Maine.gov, that particular plate is meant to show support for the Barbara Bush Children's Hospital at Portland's Maine Medical Center.

When you get a Barbara Bush Children's Hospital plate, the additional fees will be given to the hospital as a donation. So, in addition to getting a unique plate that really sticks out, you also make a donation to a very worthwhile cause.

What is the Barbara Bush Children's Hospital?

The Maine Health website explains that the hospital, which was founded in 1995, treats seriously ill children from around Northern New England.  The hospital is named after the late First Lady because of her commitment to children's issues around the world.

Over the years, both the President and First Lady visited the hospital many times.

One of those visits took place on her 86th birthday in 2011.

The website explains:

Mrs. Bush visited many times, including on her 86th birthday in 2011, when she read patients a favorite children’s book, “Learning to Ski with Mr. Magee” by Maine author Chris Van Dusen. In addition to promoting health, Mrs. Bush was also a strong advocate for children’s literacy and learning programs.
