The snow kept falling Monday afternoon in eastern Maine, making roads all but impassible and Mainers shoveling in shifts just to keep up.

Bangor was expected to see 24 inches as a result of the storm, which also brought gusting, cold winds to the region.

The snow left the Bangor area around 6 p.m. Monday and continued Down East until about 9 p.m.

Most schools and businesses were closed Monday.

The blowing and drifting snow caused treacherous road conditions, with State Police asking commercial truck drivers to say off Interstate 95 after a spate of accidents.

In some areas of eastern Maine, the Maine Department of Transportation suspended plowing because of low visibility.
