Police have identified the woman who was struck and killed on the interstate last night as she tried to cross near the Kennebunk toll plaza.

Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland says the victim has been identified as 37-year-old Kelly Genito of Cairo, New York. Witnesses say she was on her cell phone as she attempted to cross the highway and Troopers say it was not the first time that evening that she had crossed.

The woman was originally struck by a pickup truck, driven by 59-year-old Christopher Manos of Lincoln, who called 911 immediately to report the incident, just after 10 p.m. Police say two other vehicles likely ran over her body, but that she died instantly when hit by the pickup.

Genito's husband, 38-year-old Marco Genito, is a long-haul trucker who was sleeping in the cab of his rig when she was struck. The couple had delivered items to Lewiston and Medway before pulling into the southbound service plaza at around 6 p.m. Troopers located Mr. Genito when they were interviewing people in the parking lot. At that time, he didn't know his wife had been hit.

Genito received a summons on a charge of violating a protection order, that has been filed against him by his wife. The charge was filed after consultation with the York County District Attorney's Office. The couple have three children, and Mr. Genito returned to his home early this morning to be with them, after talking to troopers.
