Google always features an image or animated GIF in relation to the day. So what's up with today's GIF of the solar system?

Today's marks the 540th birthday of Nicolaus Copernicus. Copernicus was a Polish mathematician and astronomer during the Renaissance period. His big claim to fame was discovering that the sun is the center of the solar system.

It was quite the ground breaking theory at a time where science was nothing more than a challenge to religion. Copernicus published a book called De Revolutionibus Obium Coelestium. Translated it's On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres. The book and his findings sparked the Scientific Revolution.

A weird coincidence, Copernicus died the same date his book was published years before! Weirdddd...

Sorry I didn't get you a card Nicolaus...maybe next year!
