A group calling themselves 'Women on 20's' is working to get an influential woman on the $20 bill, replacing Andrew Jackson. The organization has set up a website and is asking people to vote for their favorite of fifteen inspiring women. My question is - where is Margaret Chase Smith?

It's an impressive list of women, I have to admit. Harriet Tubman, who worked with the Underground Railroad. Clara Barton who brought medical aid to the front lines in the Civil War. Betty Friedan, who's often credited with bringing feminism into the forefront. And Alice Paul, who helped give women the vote. These are just a few of the fifteen, and they're all very deserving.

Maine is represented in the ranks, with Frances Perkins. Frances was FDR's four-term labor secretary, the first woman cabinet member in American history. She's credited with the Social Security Act, minimum wage, the 40-hour work week, and more. Certainly very deserving of recognition!

But I wish Margaret Chase Smith was among their ranks. Smith was the first woman in history to serve in both the House and the Senate. And the first woman to serve in either capacity from Maine. She was the longest-serving Republican woman in history and got into office originally when her husband fell ill and asked that she complete his term. Rather than just serving out the remainder of his term, she went on to do great things, including a memorable speech in 1950 that criticized McCarthyism.

Personally, I would love to finally see a woman represented on our paper money, rather than just those dollar coins. You can vote for your favorite of the fifteen candidates at the 'Women on 20's' website. Here's hoping they get their wish!
