It seems like summer, or at least the hot weather, comes around a little later here in Bangor than in other parts of the country, but there's still plenty of time to enjoy the pools for people who want to beat the heat without leaving the city.

City officials have planned a Saturday, June 18, 2016 opening of Hayford Park's Beth Pancoe Municipal Aquatic Center and the East Side's Dakin Pool.

The Pancoe pool, completed in 2004 with the help of $1.4 million donation from author Stephen King and his wife Tabitha, is named in honor Beth Pancoe, a Bangor High School diver whose family lived next to the Kings on West Broadway. She died in 1999 after a battle with leukemia.
