The Maine Warden Service says the man who died on Chemo Pond after jumping in to help another was a 54-year-old from Brewer.

Eugene Hill died after jumping from a party boat Monday evening, according to Lieutenant Dan Scott of the Maine Warden Service. Hill was boating with his friends, 42-year-old Seth Bubar of Lewiston and 69-year-old Randa Koxzera of Clifton, when the incident happened at around 7:30 p.m. Monday on Chemo Pond in Bradley. Scott says Bubar had fallen into the water while trying to climb onto a towable tube that was alongside the boat. Seeing he was struggling with it, Hill got into the water to help Bubar back onto the boat. Bubar was able to grab the ladder, but it blew out of Hill's reach.

Koczera called 911 and threw items to Hill in an effort to assist him back to the boat, but Hill was unable to stay afloat and slipped beneath the surface. Several residents from around the pond tried to help but were unable to locate the man. Wardens say there were several life jackets on the pontoon boat, but none were being worn.

Game Wardens used a Remotely Operated Vehicle, or ROV, beneath the surface of the pond throughout the night. At around 2:00 Tuesday morning, they located and recovered Hill's body from 20 feet of water. The Warden Service was aided by the Penobscot County Sheriff's Office, Maine State Police, Eddington Fire and Rescue, and Brewer Fire and Rescue.

Boaters are reminded to wear their life jackets at all times while operating both motorized and paddle craft on lakes, rivers, and ponds. In addition, boaters should have with them a readily available Type IV, throwable flotation device.
