The Maine Warden Service has revealed the identity of a 14-year-old Fort Fairfield boy who drowned Saturday while swimming in the Aroostook River with some friends.

Jacob Williams was swimming in Fort Fairfield near the confluence of Hockenhull Brook when he indicated to his friends that he needed help, Maine Warden Service spokesman Corporal John MacDonald said in a Monday news release.

One of his friends unsuccessfully tried to help Jacob, while others called 911.

The Maine Warden Service, Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office, Fort Fairfield Police Department and Fort Fairfield Fire and Rescue responded to the incident.

A game warden found Jacob in about 10 feet of water approximately 45 minutes after the incident occurred.

The teen was brought to shore, where life-saving measures were taken, but to no avail.

The State Medical Examiner’s Office has ruled the cause of death an accidental drowning.

Jacob was an 8th grader at Fort Fairfield Middle High School.
