Heading into its seventh season, The Walking Dead is already at an age when most series would look to start wrapping things up, though its status as AMC’s flagship hit with miles of Robert Kirkman story ahead would make that unlikely. It’s a question sure to plague the AMC series more and more in the coming years, but according to Andrew Lincoln and Scott Gimple, one idea sees Robert Kirkman ending both his long-running comic and the TV Walking Dead simultaneously.

Take this with a grain of salt, as AMC surely intends to keep The Walking Dead going as long as humanly possible, while Robert Kirkman has not expressed any immediate fatigue with the comic, whose issues now run into the 150s. That didn’t stop Kevin Smith and IMDb from at least posing the question to an assemble panel of Andrew Lincoln, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Norman Reedus and Steven Yeun, to which Lincoln provided an intriguing answer:

I don’t know, man. I mean, the comic book’s still going, and Scott Gimple said that maybe there was an opportunity to finish the comic book and finish the TV series at the same time, which would be kind of cool. You should probably ask Robert Kirkman.

We’re talking about a secondhand answer from a figure that wouldn’t necessarily have insight into how The Walking Dead franchise comes to a close, but it’s at least of interest to consider. The AMC series is unlikely to catch up with its literary inspiration anytime soon, but would we ever get a chance to see characters like The Whisperers or Alpha in live-action before both closed down? Is it plausible that end comes sometime in the next few years?

The panel also saw Morgan joking that none of his victims were onstage with him (come on, like he’d say they were), but The Walking Dead Season 7 will keep trudging on as early as October 23, so stay tuned for the latest.
