John Candy passed away twenty years ago on this date,  March 4th, 1994.

The Canadian actor got his start in Toronto's Second City group before moving along to acting in movies.  He died of a heart attack at the age of 43.

Here are my top five John Candy movies!

  • 1

    Uncle Buck

John Candy plays Uncle Buck in this 1989 John Hughes comedy.  Uncle Buck ends up babysitting his brother's kids.  Of course it starts out with everyone hating each other and then ends very nicely.

  • 2

    Stripes

Though John Candy only held a supporting role in this 1981 Billy Murray flick, his role as Pvt. Dewey "Ox" Oxberger was very funny and memorable, especially on the obstacle course.

  • 3

    The Great Outdoors

John Candy teamed up with Dan Aykroyd in this hilariously funny outdoor flick.  Candy actually played the sane character.

  • 4

    Cool Runnings

John Candy played the coach of a Jamaican bobsled team preparing for the Winter Olympics.  It was a very funny contrast to say the least. The film made over $86 million worldwide.

  • 5

    Planes, Trains and Automobiles

Steve Martin and John Candy share a very funny three day trip filled with misadventure as they make their way to New York in time for Thanksgiving.
