After two moderately successful Tomb Raider movies, Paramount was looking to reboot the action-adventure franchise with a younger star. They had reportedly talked to Star Wars: The Force Awakens actress Daisy Ridley and probably every other young female actress in Hollywood (including Suicide Squad star Cara Delevigne) and have now found their new Lara Croft: Alicia Vikander.

Vikander, who just won an Oscar for her performance in The Danish Girl, will star in the film, simply titled Tomb Raider. Sources told Variety that despite meeting with a multitude of other actresses for the role, Vikander was always their top choice.

The upcoming movie is said to be based on Square Enix’s 2013 game reboot, which followed a much younger Lara Croft who was just learning the tricks of the raiding tombs trade. Roar Uthaug, who just released the Norwegian thriller The Wave, is directing the film for Paramount. A fall 2017 release date was originally announced but considering the film just found its star and doesn’t yet have a finalized script, that seems ambitious.

Paramount desperately needs to add another franchise to their roster, as they’re one of the few studios in Hollywood without a superhero to exploit (they lost the rights to Marvel films when Disney acquired Marvel Entertainment in 2009). Their biggest franchise is the Transformers series of films, but even that has show signs of fatigue and lag. Attempts to turn G.I. Joe and Terminator into successful franchises have met with little success.

It’s strange to think that about a year ago, before Ex Machina hit theaters, no one knew who Alicia Vikander was. Now she’s an Oscar winner with a starring role in Jason Bourne and is taking over the Tomb Raider franchise from Angelina Jolie.
